Snips and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails…
Full disclosure: I don’t know what a snip is, but apparently, according to an old English nursery rhyme, it is a key ingredient in the makeup of all little boys, including my unborn son. IT’S A BOY!
On Tuesday, with Laura’s parents present, our OB/GYN, Dr. Phillips, pointed to an indistinguishable blur on a sonogram screen indicating the most key ingredient in making a little boy. We were, and continue to be, ecstatic about the news. The insufferable grin on my face the last two days is beginning to worry my co-workers.
In all honesty, I don’t know what my reaction would have been if we were told our child was to be the fairer sex. I do know that I feel truly blessed and terribly frightened to be having a son.
It’s terrifying to think that I’m now responsible for shaping this tiny blob of a thing into a healthy, thinking, learning and loving man.
On the other hand, it’s a wonderful thought to know that I will have the opportunity to introduce my little boy to the great men whom I have known and loved and learned from. I’m also comforted by my partner in crime; by the small army of current mothers who will undoubtedly engulf (smother?) the child as soon as he enters the world; by the small village of friends who surround us; and by the fact that there have been roughly 50 billion little sons born over the course of human history, and every one of them has turned out just perfectly…right?
